The representation of women in technical degrees (Engineering and Architecture) stands at around 25%, according to data from the Ministry of Education. In ICT degrees (Information and Communication Technologies), the percentage of women is only 10% of the total number of enrolled students.
Encouraging STEM Vocations Through Proximity
Every year, the University of Alicante promotes an initiative that goes far beyond a simple educational activity. The programme “Quiero ser Ingeniera” (I Want to Be an Engineer) was created with a clear purpose: to bring STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) closer to pre-university students, especially girls, in order to spark interest and break down stereotypes that still persist.
This event becomes a space where curiosity is transformed into possibility. Through workshops, talks and meetings with professionals, participants not only discover what it means to study engineering, but can also begin to imagine themselves as part of that future. And that, in itself, is powerful.
The Value of Female Role Models and Support
In this context, my role as a role model takes on a very special meaning. It is not just about explaining technical concepts or sharing my professional journey. It is about listening, offering support, and answering questions that often do not appear in textbooks: “Will I be capable?”, “Will I fit into this world?”, “Is there a place for me here?”
My experience in the technology sector has been marked by constant challenges, continuous learning and, also, by the reality that there are still very few women in certain environments. Over the years, I have learned that technology is not just code or systems: it is a tool to transform society. But for that transformation to be fair and representative, we need diversity.
That is why taking part in initiatives like this is so important to me. Because I know that sometimes it only takes seeing someone like you to start believing that you can get there too.
More Diversity for a Technological Future
Supporting young people along this path is, without doubt, one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Seeing that spark of interest ignite, watching perceptions change, and observing how bigger questions begin to emerge… that is when everything makes sense.
The lack of female role models in STEM is not just a question of numbers; it is a question of opportunity. Bringing engineering closer to girls does not mean excluding anyone, but rather broadening horizons and ensuring that talent is not lost due to prejudice or lack of information.
Building a Future with Equal Opportunities
If I had to give one piece of advice to those who are beginning to consider their future, it would be this: do not let anyone decide for you what you are capable of. Technology needs diverse, creative and courageous minds. And your place in it does not depend on stereotypes, but on your curiosity and your willingness to learn.
I will close with a belief that we also share in the professional sphere. At Banco Sabadell, we work to promote equality between women and men across all areas, including technology. Because we know that real progress only happens when we move forward together, with equal opportunities.
The future of engineering has not yet been written. And fortunately, there are more and more voices ready to write it.
