Digital fraud has become one of the major challenges of the technological age. The growing sophistication of cybercrime has highlighted the importance of strengthening prevention, digital education and protection systems to address threats that are constantly evolving.

The evolution of digital threats and cybercrime

To address this issue, the Spanish Committee of the European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC) organised the event “The rise of digital fraud and how to prevent it” at the Círculo Ecuestre in Barcelona, where we had the opportunity to take part. The event brought together experts from the financial and business sectors to examine how cybercrime affects both businesses and users.

The sessions explored the speed at which these threats are evolving, highlighting the need to combine technological innovation with user awareness in order to tackle them effectively.

Social engineering: the new weapon of cybercriminals

David Armengol, Director of Fraud Management, highlighted that cybercriminals are no longer focused solely on breaching technological systems. Instead, they are increasingly turning to social engineering techniques and psychological manipulation to deceive users.

Combating fraud requires going beyond technology: it calls for a strategic approach based on effective collaboration between the public and private sectors, the sharing of information and intelligence to anticipate threats, continuous innovation in prevention and detection capabilities, and the training and awareness of individuals and organisations as the first line of defence.

Prevention: the best tool against digital fraud

In the face of these threats, prevention remains the best tool for combating fraud, supported by efforts to raise awareness, provide training and promote safe habits when using digital channels. Financial institutions must continue to strengthen their detection and protection systems to anticipate increasingly sophisticated forms of fraud.

At Banco Sabadell, we work every day to reaffirm our commitment to our customers’ security, train our employees in cybersecurity and promote collaborative initiatives to prevent and combat digital fraud.
